Boruto Manga Chapter 13 Review

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga has just introduced something that will blow your mind, whether you’re a longtime fan of the series, including Naruto, or new to getting into Boruto. Since the end of the original Boruto manga, the authors and creators behind the series have taken certain liberties, adding to the lore and abilities previously never thought of.

The Naruto series has always been heavy on action, jutsu, or even Genjutsu, which warps reality or whatnot. However, the stuff introduced in Two Blue Vortex Chapter 13 is mind-blowing and insane. We have to talk about it. There’s a lot to say about the Boruto series as a whole, especially with the addition of Chapter 13. I will dive deeper into Boruto: Two Blue Vortex in a future blog, but for now, let’s focus on the chapter.

Chapter 13 starts where the last one left off, with Boruto on the floor after the attack from Jura, and things are in a bad situation. However, very conveniently, just as Jura is about to finish Boruto off, Mamushi shows up—AKA the Divine Tree version of Bug—and says that Matsuri discovered Boruto has an accomplice. It felt a little like a convenient way to avoid Boruto being killed. Jura could have just finished the job right there if he wanted to, but it is what it is—plot protection.

Shortly after, Jura says, “Well, Hidari’s bulb is about to rot, so you got lucky. It was like divine protection,” which was such a bar if you think about it. These are divine trees, and their not attacking and finishing Boruto was divine protection. Talk about a double entendre in the middle of Boruto! You have to love it.

But just as Jura finishes telling Boruto, “I’m not going to kill you today,” Boruto starts to reminisce, thinking back to a time when either Leaf Shinobi or Sand Shinobi were hunting him down. I was looking at them—they reminded me of some people from the Hidden Sand, so I’m not 100% sure. Hidden Sand would make more sense, but something we see later in the chapter makes me question it. So, during the time skip post-Sasuke getting trapped by a tree, this is possibly Boruto either going through the Hidden Sand, maybe trying to find any camaraderie there or any people that would have his back, and maybe they were hunting him down at that point. Or, again, it could just be the Leaf who caught up with him at one time.

As Boruto was looking for a way to escape, Koji’s toad approached Boruto, telling him, “I’ve got a way out of here.” I won’t lie—if I were Boruto in that situation, I don’t know what I’d be doing. These people are hunting me down, and now a talking frog—or talking toad—is approaching me! But Boruto took the toad up on the offer and was summoned by Kashin Koji to an abandoned Orochimaru hideout near the Land of Wind.

While there was no Orochimaru in this chapter, it was interesting that Boruto was brought to the lair. The Boruto manga always has some reflection of something that happened in Naruto. Remember during the time skip, where was Sasuke? In Orochimaru’s hideout. During this time skip, where is Boruto, at least now? Orochimaru’s hideout. Koji then begins to confirm with Boruto about the big switcheroo, thanks to the omnipotence from Eida, switching Boruto’s and Kawaki’s lives, and he tries to confirm: “You’re Boruto, right?”

I’m glad we got to see Koji apologize to Boruto for what happened earlier in the series with the Ao situation. It gives a foundation between the two characters, addressing what happened long before the Isshiki battle. That was a nice touch, contextualizing how Boruto and Koji work together.

And then the bombshells start to drop for Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Koji begins to reveal some incredible capabilities that he has obtained post-Isshiki battle. Apparently, during the Isshiki battle, when Koji was knocked to the floor, he felt he had accomplished his goal. While Koji was lying there precariously, he began receiving visions of future realities. Immediately when you look at those pages and panels, there’s one, in particular, you have to address and say, “Wait a minute, what the heck is going on?” because there’s a panel of the Divine Tree people with one extra person in the midst of it. That person resembles Shinki, Gaara’s son from the Hidden Sand Village, which makes so much sense based on what I said earlier.

Maybe, at some point during the time skip, Boruto crossed through the Hidden Sand Village and linked up with Shinki. The Divine Tree may have captured Shinki at this point.

As people were hunting down Boruto Uzumaki, everyone was after him. Or it could just be that the character looked very similar to him, but I’m putting my money on the idea that it’s probably Shinki post-time skip, just with a Divine Tree makeover—which is so fire! In the Boruto anime, Shinki was one of the coolest characters who never got much explanation in the manga.

Koji explains further that Amado used Shibai Otsutsuki—the god of the Otsutsuki’s—DNA on each Kara member when he was putting them together, giving all of them certain abilities based on what Shibai had. Well, not all of them; a few didn’t get so lucky. But Code got the claw, Daemon got the reflect ability, and Eida got all those godlike abilities, including omnipotence. But Boruto, Delta, and Koji didn’t get any, which is a shame because, based on what was said next, there was a possibility that they could have.

We’ll never know if Boruto has an ability, and there’s still a possibility for Delta. As for Koji, at the very last second, it was like some Super Saiyan transformation—he was gifted with the ability of prescience. I want to say “prescience” because it makes it easier. I know that’s not the word and that prescience is an actual word, but we will roll with “prescience” because it sounds better to me. It’s less about science explaining things and more about possibilities beyond scientific explanation.

This ability reminds me of someone from Bleach, though I won’t spoil which character. It’s reminiscent of an awesome power someone wielded in Bleach, and I’m not mad at it. There have been times when Boruto seemed inspired by Bleach, and I’m here for it.

Here’s where it gets even more interesting about this whole ability to see the future: our future isn’t one straight path. Koji saw futures where Isshiki completed the Tree plan. He saw visions where Kawaki and Boruto died, and the tree was completed—there are multiple possible futures. He was gifted with the ability to see that the future could go this route or that route, which is mind-blowing to think about. We’re increasingly delving into a multiverse concept within the Borutomanga series. If we add all these possible futures, there are endless possibilities for what can happen in the story.

The TV anime could take so many routes, and there are possibilities for movies, too. With all these potential futures, that is a big deal for expanding the Boruto story. It also makes me think: wait a minute. Long ago, maybe you caught the article or didn’t, but I theorized about time travel in Boruto, particularly regarding Kawaki and the possibility of Amado being connected to him. Maybe Amado is even Kawaki from the future. If there are different possible futures, then there’s the possibility, once again, that this Amado could be from one of those possible futures. Amado could even be a character we know now! Just wanted to throw that out there.

On the plus side of all this, one of the epic things about this is that Koji says, “I can teach you the abilities you were supposed to learn way later on, right now.” Likewise, he could give Boruto the intel on how to help save Sasuke from the tree. So essentially, everything we’ve seen of Boruto and how strong he’s been in Two Blue Vortex—the Uzuhiko Rasengan, him defeating Code, despite Code being said to be, without his limiters, surpassing Naruto and Sasuke, and Boruto making him look like a chump—that’s all thanks to Koji. Big up to Big Koji, baby!

Although, if you think about it, it’s like, damn, I wonder what Boruto would have been without Koji. In that regard, this is a good possible future in which Boruto is super-powered. He has the intel on how to save Sasuke because you know Sasuke would be a big help. Boruto is suffering without his master.

I won’t lie; Koji was by far the best thing about this chapter, with all the intel, the information, and the exposition he dumped. And it was a great dump because he breaks the news that the worst future of all is the Ten-Tails breaking free from Code and evolving into Divine Trees. Essentially, the situation we’re facing now seems inevitable based on what Koji said, as the trees were there in almost all the futures he saw. But it’s still the worst.

The most dangerous of them is Jura, which makes sense because we’ve already seen Jura blast Boruto down. He could have potentially crippled Sarada, and ultimately, he is supposed to kill Boruto. But I’m wondering if that fate has already been evaded—considering it seemed like he was supposed to kill Boruto right then and there, maybe Koji’s involvement, sending that toad, stopped the situation.

So, that whole thing about him being supposed to kill Boruto—maybe we’ve already averted that situation. It also clarifies that Jura will be around most of the Divine Tree arc, and I like the setup. It feels like they are giving us more of a proper villain in the Boruto series. Code and the Ten-Tails thing, even towards the end of Boruto, wasn’t giving that menacing threat of a true villain. We had the introduction of Shibai Otsutsuki, a character we’ve only heard about, but I do not doubt that at some point, Shibai Otsutsuki will return in some form or another. They are hyping him up way too much not to do anything with him. It’s similar to the whole thing with Hagoromo, the Sage of the Six Paths. He’s essentially playing that role for Boruto.

Amid all this conversation between Boruto and Koji, one of the things Boruto laid down very sternly is that, regardless of whatever future may come from it, he is not killing Kawaki to restore the Uzumaki household. That’s his goal. I appreciate that he said that’s his goal instead of the classic “That’s my ninja way.” We had that with Naruto, and that’s his thing. Boruto saying his goal also sparks a bigger conversation about the series. Remember the words Kawaki said early on, at the beginning of the series, when we had that time skip flash forward: “The age of shinobi is over.”

Even though I’m sure Boruto represents being a shinobi, ultimately, he’s not saying, “I’m about that shinobi life.” It’s just his goal. Although there’s a possibility that when this gets adapted into the anime, it could get turned into his “ninja way,” Boruto’s never been that type of guy. He follows after Sasuke, and Sasuke’s never been like, “That’s my ninja way.” Sasuke’s always said, “I’m going to do my thing.” And I have to heavily praise the one panel where Boruto puts on the headband, discussing how he’ll finish Code and the Ten-Tails. That was probably my favorite look for Boruto in the entire series. That panel was just fire! What can I say? I dig the look with the long hair.

Then we return to the present, and Himawari awakens and easily heals Sarada’s damaged nerves from Jura’s blast. That had me thinking, okay, everybody in Boruto at this point is way stronger. You have to throw out the notion of power leveling from Naruto when it comes to Boruto. Everyone has already surpassed what you would expect in some form or another. Like Himawari healing Sarada’s damaged nerves when she had just been told that it didn’t look very good and that she might be disabled—that’s a major asset. Naruto couldn’t do something like that with his powers, even when he was using Kurama’s chakra throughout Naruto. So, that’s a massive win and a huge asset, especially since they’ve been lacking a healer on the squad. Sarada does more combat, and they haven’t had anyone in that healer role. So, Himawari having these powers is a big win.

Then there were more ordinary parts, like Konohamaru and Kawaki teaming up to cuff Boruto and Kawaki finding Koji’s frog and Boruto’s jacket. I was like, at least Kawaki was cool enough to allow Boruto to be healed. But Konohamaru? Let’s do this thing! I was a bit disappointed, though. However, if you study the chapter carefully, in every scene where Boruto is laid out on the ground and you look back at last month’s chapter, there was a conversation—I think it was either Boruto or Boruto with the toad—about not losing it. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re in for a massive setup where BoruShiki rages and wreaks havoc after this. If Boruto’s handcuffed and can’t use his awesome jutsu, and nobody can save him from the situation, there are only a few routes left.

Either he goes through the full process, and they punish him, or he’s about to let loose, break free from the cuffs, and things will get bad. We’ve already seen that nobody in the village can stop Boruto. Right now, Boruto could technically be Hokage if he wanted to. He has a claim to the throne as the real and true heir, and he’s stronger than everyone there. We’ve seen it in every interaction with Kawaki, to the point where Boruto was almost big-bro-ing him—like, “Get your arm off me before I cut it off.” Orochimaru is just that guy. So, seeing them put cuffs on Boruto and all of that? I was like, what?

Kawaki’s character is pretty fascinating, though. He finds the toad but doesn’t relay the intel to anyone, even though he knows it’s one of Koji’s frogs. For Kawaki, allowing Boruto to be healed and not saying anything about the toad makes him a very complex character.

The epicness of this chapter wraps up with Jura using the tree bulb to revive Hidari, which I was conflicted about. On the one hand, it makes sense because they’re more advanced than a regular Zetsu or Ten-Tailed creature. But on the other hand, it defeats the purpose—wasn’t Hidari just destroyed? Then again, they’ve been building up Hidari’s character and connection with Sarada, so I’m torn on whether I was digging it. However, I could see Hidari doing something good in the future, maybe because of his link to Sasuke and his struggle with these memories.

The chapter ends with them plucking another bulb and anxiously awaiting what will emerge and what they’ll name it. Based on what happened earlier in the chapter, I do not doubt that the bulb will be essentially a Shinki tree Divine creature, and the story will move forward from there. I love that Boruto is utilizing a lot of characters who may not have been the most important in the past. Even if you go back to Narutoor early Boruto, like Moegi or Bug, they’re making them formidable, credible threats you care about. I’ve always thought Shinki was an awesome character, but the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga—not the anime—never really utilized him. So, if they’re using him, they will involve the other villages and nations, and the story will get even more grandiose as it continues.

In all honesty, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 13 changed the game again, introducing the idea of alternate possible futures. We’re seeing the depths of how much Koji has influenced this series. Not to mention, these abilities that Shibai Otsutsuki had were given to people like Eida, Daemon, and Code. That also leads me to believe that, at some point, Delta will have a massive power-up, too. The introduction of Himawari’s epic healing powers—like, even Sakura wasn’t healing that quickly, let alone healing that kind of damage! The introduction of a new Divine Tree, and in general, this chapter, in my opinion, was one of the best ones yet.

Then again, this manga has been crazy! Out of 13 monthly chapters, there have been only one or two that weren’t as significant. They’ve all been incredible, and Chapter 13 is no exception. The future looks crazy for Boruto: Two Blue Vortex and the series overall.

Is Boruto about to lose it, turn into Momoshiki/BoruShiki, and wreak havoc to escape and escape from the cuffs? Or is Koji going to get involved yet again? What are your thoughts and expectations for Boruto Two Blue Vortex Chapter 14 and beyond? The Boruto manga is going crazy!
