Boruto’s Abilities: Every Jutsu & Power Explained Before the Time Skip
Boruto Uzumaki’s Abilities
With Boruto’s time skip just a few days away, it’s important to understand how powerful Boruto has become since his early days as a ninja. In this blog, I will list and explain every ability Boruto has used at any point throughout the manga and anime. I won’t be speculating about future power-ups or abilities, just those he has used in canon. This article should give us a good idea of what to expect from Boruto post-time skip.
Let’s start with the small things, such as the Shadow Clone Jutsu. This Jutsu might seem basic at face value since it is, but it’s also very useful and difficult to maintain if you use more than one. Boruto, on the other hand, was able to use up to four Shadow Clones at a very young age and has since learned to use up to 12 Shadow Clones simultaneously, per the anime continuity. This is pretty insane for a child his age since the Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu evenly distributes your chakra to every clone, which can lead to the user’s death if they don’t have the chakra to maintain such a process. The good thing is that the chakra given to the clone is returned to the user upon its destruction, so your chakra isn’t completely lost unless the opponent absorbs it. You might be saying that Naruto was able to create over a thousand clones at this age, but he’s an anomaly due to his chakra reserves, not the standard. All in all, Boruto carries on his father’s legacy regarding his proficiency in using this Jutsu.
At number 2, we have the Gentle Fist. This technique is a form of hand-to-hand combat used by members of the Hyuga clan. It allows them to inflict internal damage by attacking the body’s chakra pathway system, which in turn injures the organs closely intertwined with the chakra network that has been struck. This is done by the user injecting a certain amount of their chakra into the victim’s body, which causes severe damage even with the slightest tap. This technique can be enhanced by employing the Byakugan, which allows the user to see the opponent’s precise chakra points. Attacking these points increases the damage done to the opponent and can lead to them being unable to use chakra, thus preventing them from performing ninjutsu temporarily. Boruto has access to the most basic form of this technique since he doesn’t have the Byakugan, thus unable to see the opponent’s chakra points. However, this might change in the future since Boruto now has access to Momoshiki’s Byakugan and is confirmed to be able to see chakra points through the Jougan, but we’ll get to that later on.
Coming in at number 3, we have the Rasengan, which is just a spinning ball of chakra in its simplest form. However, this spinning or rotation adds to the insane power level of the technique, confirmed to be superior to Sasuke’s Chidori, which Kakashi accidentally created after he failed to perform the Rasengan itself. However, unlike Kakashi, not only was Boruto able to perform the Rasengan within a few days of training, but he also subconsciously added lightning release to the technique. This change in chakra nature made it so that the Rasengan appeared invisible until the point of contact. Boruto has become so proficient at using the ability that he can now make the Rasengan invisible at the initial point of creation instead of after the Jutsu has already been formed. So not only is Boruto’s normal Rasengan stronger due to it being infused with lightning release, but it also makes it undetectable by opponents such as Fused Momoshiki, who possessed two golden Byakugans and multiple Rinnegans. Delta was able to see Rasengan using her scientific ninja tools, so it’s not impossible for this to become a problem for villains in the franchise’s future.
With that being said, Boruto is also shown to be able to perform Wind-Style Rasengan in the anime continuity. This Rasengan is superior in power to the regular Rasengan, and the lightning releases Rasengan since the wind is superior to lightning in Naruto’s universe. This Jutsu also comes with the added benefit of attacking the opponent at the cellular level, bypassing their natural durability. Boruto has access to this Rasengan in the anime, but he hasn’t fully mastered it, and it likely won’t be featured in the manga soon. We could depend on seeing Boruto’s High Compression Rasengan, which is similar to a regular Rasengan condensed and compressed to its limit. In this state, the Rasengan can penetrate targets with little resistance or knock them out if they possess powerful defences. This is more likely to be shown post-time skip since Momoshiki used a version of the technique called Rasen-dan, which is a highly compressed Rasengan. So, this version of Rasengan being present in the manga and Boruto using his Compression of Rasengan in the fight versus Isshiki shows they’re interested in crossing over this technique to the manga continuity.
Now, coming in at number 4, we have the Summoning Technique. This one only exists in the anime continuity. Still, Boruto was shown to be able to summon Nue in the early Academy Arc before it was revealed that Sumire could manipulate the beast as well. This one is quite interesting since Nue is stated to have roots with the Ōtsutsuki, but more so with Kaguya specifically. So, there might be more to this story regarding that beast, but we’ll have to wait and see. In addition, Boruto also formed a temporary summoning contract with a powerful snake from Ryūchi Cave called Garaga in the anime. This one is less likely to make it into the manga due to its temporary nature, but it’s still possible.
At number 5, we have Sealing Jutsu. This one flew under my radar for a very long time, but Boruto can also perform basic sealing Jutsus to keep someone from moving. Again, this was only shown in the anime, but we might also see it in the manga. We’ll just have to wait and see.
At number 6, we have Kenjutsu, which pertains to techniques that entail the usage of swords. This was shown in the very first episode of Boruto, which depicts time-skip Boruto using a katana in his battle versus Kawaki. In addition, we see a much younger Boruto proficient at using a chakra blade that mimics the usage of an actual katana, along with using the other half of Chōjūrō’s sword during the Hidden Mist Arc. The groundwork has been set, so we hope to see Boruto fitted with his katana in the early chapters of the time-skip period.
Coming in at number 7, we have Lightning Release: Thunderclap Arrow. This technique allows the user to mould and shape lightning-nature chakra. They can then throw the lightning at their opponents as a projectile-based attack. Boruto is very skilled with this technique, as he can combine it with water release to electrocute his opponents, along with being able to coat his shurikens in lightning style and hurl them at his enemies as well.
At number 8, we have Wind Style: Gale Palm. This wind-based technique allows the user to increase their velocity using air pressure, thus increasing their overall speed. It also allows the user to deliver a powerful attack by clasping their hands together and compressing the wind in that area. Boruto can also apply this to his tools and shuriken, similar to Lightning Release. Now, there’s another similar ability called Boruto Stream. This does what Gale Palm does but to a greater degree. Instead of Boruto using the technique himself, he employs the help of his teammates or shadow clones to propel himself forward at higher speeds. This technique can also increase the speed of allies, making it very versatile.
At number 9, we have the Water Bullet Technique, a highly versatile technique with many variations. After kneading the chakra in their stomach, the user expels a large quantity of water as a powerful torrent aimed at their intended target. This Jutsu is used a lot by Boruto, especially in the anime, so we can expect to see this ability post-time skip as well.
At number 10, we have the Karma Seal. Now, this one is a very special ability since, in addition to providing Boruto with increased speed, strength, durability, and an insane healing factor, it also gives him additional abilities, such as the ability to absorb all chakra-based attacks and use space-time ninjutsu. So, it’s abilities within an ability. There’s also a new level to using the Karma Seal, dubbed the “True Essence Form.” This might not be the official name, but it’s the one fans use. This increases every single attribute provided by the first stage of the seal, so it’s just an increase in power as well. But it also comes with the bonus of having Momoshiki’s Ōtsutsuki Byakugan. We’ve never seen Boruto activate Momoshiki’s dōjutsu before, but we actually saw it once when he used it to see into the future accidentally. However, we’ve never seen him activate it for battle, but he does have access to it in this form. This is pretty insane since, as I mentioned before, Boruto can see into the future using Momoshiki’s dōjutsu. So, if he can control this ability, it would be very beneficial in battle.
Now, at number 11, we have Boruto’s Ōtsutsuki-fied form, dubbed by fans as Borushiki. This is Boruto still using the Karma Seal’s power, but I decided to give it a different slot since, for the most part, Momoshiki is in control of his movements, not Boruto. So, it’s a different person somewhat. He moves differently, fights differently, talks differently, and is currently on a completely different level of power compared to Boruto using the first two stages of the Karma Seal. Boruto claims he has more control of Momoshiki’s power at this point, so we can expect to see Boruto in control of his Borushiki form in the future in the time-skip period, which should be interesting.
Finally, at number 12, we have the Jōgan, the “filler Dojutsu.” The Jōgan itself is a very controversial dōjutsu. Ever since the first chapter of Boruto, it has been debated whether or not it exists in the manga. Everyone believes that Boruto will awaken this dōjutsu post-time skip. It might take a while, but we’ll get there eventually. In essence, this dōjutsu allows Boruto to see chakra pathways, see through dimensional rifts, see across dimensions, and hear what the person on the other side is saying, similar to Eida. It also allows Boruto to travel across dimensions, but that’s redundant since he already does that using the Karma Seal. However, I will say that even though this is speculation (which I said I wouldn’t do at the beginning of this article), the Jōgan might be able to access dimensions the Karma Seal cannot. That might be why this ability exists alongside the Jōgan, but we’ll have to wait and see.
As Boruto’s skills continue to evolve, his growth as a ninja becomes even more evident. With the time skip just a few days away, we’re sure to see exciting developments and new abilities that will push him to new heights.
