Boruto’s Interrogation and the Awakening of the Shinju
In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga chapter 14, the interrogation of Boruto by the Konoha Shinobi has begun. Here, we see Boruto in a position we haven’t seen since the story of Two Blue Vortexstarted—utterly helpless because of Amado’s chakra-sealing handcuffs. Boruto can’t use chakra to enhance his physical strength, nor can he use it to perform any jutsu, like the Flying Raijin, to escape, as we’ve seen him do in the story.
Currently, Boruto only has one card he can play, which he uses later in this chapter. This card is something any shinobi knows is more valuable than anything else when dealing with a threat like the one they are currently facing: information. Specifically, information on the awakened Shinju is due to Koji’s ability to track the Ten Tails’ direction, which they are unaware of.
We also see in this chapter the conflict between Shikamaru and Ino, which unfortunately leads to Shikamaru losing her as an ally. This forces him to trust another person to accomplish his mission, which is to free Boruto from the situation he is currently in. On the other hand, we see Kawaki seemingly making the same mistake that many antagonists often make—becoming too comfortable and overconfident that they have the situation under control and that nothing could go wrong. Unfortunately for him, things go wrong, and it is not just with Boruto. At the end of this chapter, we witness the birth of a new Shinju due to the defeat of Gaara and his son, Shinki, who was captured and turned into a tree, like many others before them.
Returning to Boruto’s interrogation by the Konoha shinobi, we see Boruto, after waking up, being questioned by Konohamaru, Ibiki, and Amado about the enemies they faced. Before that, Boruto tries to use the Flying Raijin to escape, but he is told what we learned in the previous chapter—that these handcuffs seal away his chakra, so he cannot use it to escape. This is where we see him relay information about the awakened Shinju to the Leaf and even inform them how each Shinju was created from the chakra of people captured by the Ten-Tails. With Hidari, it was Sasuke’s chakra, and then Boruto tells Konohamaru about Matsuri, who was created using Moegi’s chakra. Matsuri is targeting Boruto, just as Hidari is targeting Sarada.
This is where Amado restates why these awakened Shinju are so dangerous. He says the Ten-Tails typically operate on instinct—to devour an Otsutsuki, grow a Divine Tree, and produce a chakra fruit. However, after gaining intelligence, they become much more dangerous than before. Now, they can’t just be thought of as animals. They are specifically looking for information, driven by a need to satisfy their curiosity, and we have seen previously that they will do anything to accomplish that goal. If they succeed, it will only make them even more dangerous and challenging.
Here, we also get confirmation of Jura’s identity from Boruto. Boruto states that Jura is the Ten-Tails itself, but in a new, more humanoid form, which explains why he is far above the others regarding skill and power. With Boruto giving them all this information, it is understandable that the Konoha shinobi would want to know how he acquired it. Boruto, however, refuses to reveal his source, stating that it is for their safety. If you pay attention, you will see a panel of Amado looking at Boruto with a suspicious expression, suggesting that Amado might already know Boruto’s source. Since Amado was the one who modified Koji’s DNA with Shibai’s and would likely know about the Ten Directions ability and what it can do, and given Boruto’s possession of detailed information about the awakened Shinju, Amado might have pieced together that Koji is helping Boruto.
This is where we see that while Konoha has moved forward during Naruto’s time as Hokage, some things haven’t changed. We see the two Elders refute Boruto’s claim that he is still alive because of the beneficial information he holds. They claim they can deal with these monsters by themselves and don’t need Boruto, which we know is nonsense. Boruto is, by far, the best chance they have at taking down the awakened Shinju. Without Boruto, they likely wouldn’t have survived the confrontation against Jura and Hidari.
Kawaki, Eida, and Daemon: Watching Boruto’s Interrogation
While Boruto’s interrogation is happening, we see Kawaki with Eida and Daemon. Eida provides them with commentary on what is happening during Boruto’s interrogation. Daemon reminds Kawaki that it would be awful for him if Boruto revealed to Konoha that Naruto is still alive and that Kawaki lied to them about Naruto’s death.
Here is another example: Naruto’s death is not part of Omnipotence. While it’s true that everyone’s memories of Boruto and Kawaki have been switched, it was after Omnipotence was cast that Kawaki told them Boruto had killed Naruto. Kawaki, being his smug self, still claims that even if Boruto tells them the truth, it won’t change the fact that, in everyone’s mind, Naruto disappeared because of Boruto. Technically, Kawaki made Naruto disappear, but Omnipotence made them believe that Boruto was Kawaki.
Now, technically, Kawaki isn’t wrong. Even if Boruto didn’t kill Naruto, he could still be charged with kidnapping the Seventh Hokage and his wife. That’s not something they’ll just let slide, allowing Boruto to walk free after doing something like that. Kawaki does have a reason to be somewhat confident, considering the situation. Think about it: Boruto right now can’t use chakra, and he’s surrounded by people who want him dead. Under normal circumstances, Boruto would have no way of escaping his situation. But if you’re an antagonist in a Shippuden manga series, the last thing you want to be is overconfident. This is usually when the series turns the tide against you—which is what ends up happening later on.
Before that, however, Kawaki and Daemon are confused when Eida tells them that Boruto didn’t tell Konoha what Kawaki had done—specifically, about hiding Naruto and Hinata in the Daikokuten dimension. If Boruto had said to them that, their eyes would turn to Kawaki. Even if they know that Kawaki has Isshiki’s eye, even if they see that Kawaki was clearly made into a cyborg by Amado, and even if they can see there are no pictures of young Kawaki with Naruto, Hinata, and Himawari, they still believe that Kawaki is Naruto’s son because that’s what Omnipotence tells them.
However, they see that Kawaki has Isshiki’s abilities, like Sukunahikona and Daikokuten. This means that if Boruto had revealed Naruto and Hinata’s location, their eyes would turn to Kawaki. But Boruto doesn’t mention any of that. Kawaki is probably wondering why Boruto is staying silent, and I’m curious to see where this will go later in the story.
Shikamaru’s Struggle with Omnipotence and Boruto’s Escape
During the events leading to Boruto’s escape, we see Omnipotence in effect. While watching Boruto being interrogated and beaten by Ibiki, Shikamaru struggles to find ways to get Boruto out. We see Shikamaru recalling his conversation with Boruto about what Kawaki did but can’t remember the word “Omnipotence.” Shikamaru struggles to remember why he believes in Boruto, even saying he has no logical reason to do so.
Only after Shikamaru recalls that he decided to believe Boruto is Naruto’s son does he find an explanation for the inconsistencies he’s been seeing. He remembers that this is why he’s helping Boruto and realizes he needs to help him escape, no matter what. This is an exciting development, as it must be similar to what Sasuke experienced for a year while assisting Boruto—constantly reminding himself why he was helping Boruto and doing so because of his promise to Sarada.
After this, we see Shikamaru trying to get Ino to help him, but this time she refuses. Throughout their conversation, Ino constantly looks at Inojin, clearly worried that assisting Shikamaru might lead to something terrible happening, not just to herself but possibly to her son. She cuts off communications with Shikamaru. While some might be angry with her decision, it’s understandable from a mother’s perspective—she’s prioritizing her son’s safety.
This is when Shikamaru brings Mitsuki into the plan. Before Mitsuki enters the interrogation room, Shikamaru reminds him that he’s a shinobi and needs to put his emotions aside to complete the mission. When Mitsuki goes in, Boruto, possibly figuring out Shikamaru’s plan, sarcastically comments on whether Mitsuki is still searching for his son. Mitsuki then goes into Sage Mode and pushes Boruto against the wall, seemingly out of anger.
However, we soon find out what Shikamaru had planned. He had given Mitsuki the code to unlock Boruto’s handcuffs, freeing him. He also told Mitsuki where Boruto could find his cloak and sword. Before Boruto leaves, though, he tells everyone that he will still share information with them, but whether they use it or not is up to them. Even after being treated so horribly, Boruto still wants to help them. This makes sense, as Boruto knows Omnipotence is manipulating them and is not in their right mind.
The Fate of Gaara, Shinki, and the New Awakened Shinju
We then cut to the Hokage’s office, where we see Shikamaru possibly contemplating his future. He receives a call from Kankuro, who informs him that Gaara and Shinki have been taken down. Both are still alive, but Shinki was bitten by one of the Claw Grimes and turned into a tree.
We then cut to the Shinju Dimension, where we see the newly awakened Shinju teased at the end of the previous chapter. His name is revealed to be Ryu. We don’t know whether Ryu inherited all of Shinki’s abilities, like using Iron Sand. We know that Hidari likely didn’t inherit Sasuke’s Sharingan or any of his Mangekyō abilities—at least, we think so because we haven’t seen the full capabilities of the awakened Shinju yet. I’m curious to see whether Ryu can use Iron Sand, which would suggest that the awakened Shinju also inherits the kekkei genkai of the people from whom they were made.
Final Thoughts
Overall, chapter 14 of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex was good, except for a few moments where information was repeated unnecessarily. Other than that, it’s a decent chapter. As always, I’m curious to hear your thoughts! Code receives a task to kill Boruto and Koji, while Ryu targets Gaara. Boruto and Kawaki team up against the Shinju, uncovering Amado’s hidden plans in Chapter 15.
