Boruto Manga – Chapter 5 Review
Sasuke’s Sacrifice, The Shinju’s Awakening, and Boruto’s Long-Awaited Reunion with Sarada!
So, we have Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 5, and we have a lot to talk about regarding this chapter—from the flashback between Boruto and Sasuke training together, then fighting Code—where Sasuke eventually turns into a tree—the Shinju’s motivations, Amado and Sumire’s meaningful conversation about their memories being altered, and Boruto finally returning home where he meets Sarada for the first time in over three years.
Boruto manga Chapter 5 takes a much slower approach than Two Blue Vortex’s first four chapters. So far, with the time skip, we have been moving at a very high pace with a lot of action to reel the fans in. However, after the first four chapters, Two Blue Vortex Chapter 5 needed a much slower approach when telling the story. Since we got a lot of action and fighting, especially when showing off Boruto’s brand-new powers and abilities, it’s time to show what happened between Boruto and Sasuke during that three-year time skip.
To start the chapter, we see Boruto with his hair grown out, holding a sword in his hand, assuming this is training where Sasuke has taken him under his wing. We know that Sasuke has always trained Boruto—we’ve seen it in the Boruto movie, the Boruto anime, and the manga. But when it comes to someone like Boruto, even though he has trained under Sasuke for a little bit in Part 1, learning the lessons of what it means to be a Shinobi and things of that nature, he hasn’t learned a jutsu that was passed on from his sensei like how Naruto and Sasuke did in the original Naruto.
We see in this chapter when it comes to the flashback between Boruto and Sasuke, Sasuke has told Boruto that, in the past year they have been training, he has taught him almost all of the moves and methods that he knows, essentially passing down the torch to Boruto. This is necessary, as Naruto and Sasuke are now effectively written out of the story, so Boruto needed to take that mantle. Otherwise, we would be stuck in limbo when it comes to who is going to be the face of this series.
It was going to be Boruto one way or another. However, once we saw that Sasuke was written out of the way by turning into a tree thanks to the Claw Grimes, we all knew Boruto had to be the main guy. Due to Boruto’s incredible talent and ability to quickly learn things, Sasuke calls his student a genius. Because of that, there is nothing left for him to teach Boruto anymore.
In just one year, Boruto has learned many things. Due to the training he got from Sasuke, we could see just how strong Boruto was able to become three years later once we got into the Two Blue Vortex manga. Even though he has effectively learned almost everything from Sasuke, Sasuke once again tells Boruto that he must continue to train and not slack off, even though he knows all of his methods and teachings from his sensei. Because of that, Boruto got even more substantial later on.
As we see later in the chapter, when they fight Code, they are pushed to a corner by the Claw Grimes and overwhelmed by Code’s power. Because of this, Sasuke tells Boruto that he must continue strengthening, as they couldn’t take down Code then. Sasuke then gives Boruto an ultimatum, telling him to survive at all costs and to run away, eventually honing all the skills that Sasuke taught him to take down Code.
Before Sasuke sacrifices himself to allow Boruto to escape, he says that Boruto should keep training to the point where no one can stop him and make sure to look over Sarada. This is where we see Sasuke run off to fight the Claw Grimes in a very well-drawn panel by Ikemoto, showing Boruto’s perspective as he watches Sasuke run off to fight the Claw Grimes. As the night passes, Sasuke turns into a tree, thanks to being bitten by one of the Claw Grimes, where Boruto takes his master’s sword.
Later in the chapter, the Shinju discuss their motivations and ability to learn more, as they now have self-awareness. In the Hidden Leaf Village, some Konoha ninjas were bitten by the Claw Grimes, and one of them was Moegi, the sensei to Team 10.
As we see Moegi in the tree, the following panel shows the Shinju, who now goes by the name of Matsuri. She explains that she can sense the rage and sadness of Team 10 and Konohamaru, as they all have a close bond with Moegi herself. Because of this, the prominent leader of the Shinju, who goes by the name of Jura, confirms that this awareness is being stimulated amongst the Shinju.
Even though they are all one unit biologically, these emotions are exclusive to each character. Despite having the same desire to devour Otsutsuki, they all can think and gather their feelings. However, despite that, their final goal is to devour Otsutsuki, such as Boruto and Kawaki.
Jura tells the rest of the Shinju to reach down and think about their deepest desires. Although they are programmed to devour Otsutsuki, their feelings will develop into desires completely different from devouring an Otsutsuki. This is entirely different from the normal Ten Tails that we have seen.
Jura even explains that he doesn’t know why he feels this way. However, his deepest desire, which he says is instinctual, is to devour Naruto for some reason. I didn’t think this would happen simply because Naruto is sealed away. He’s been sealed away since the end of Part 1.
With someone like Jura, who has a similar appearance to Isshiki, it’s ironic for him to say this, considering that Naruto and Isshiki have always had some rivalry. When Jigen and Naruto first met, Jigen got the upper hand because they were much more substantial. However, in their second fight, Naruto prevails because of Baryon Mode, where Kawaki eventually finishes Isshiki.
Now that Jura is here, he is targeting Naruto, which is just so funny, considering that this is essentially round three. I am still determining when or if Naruto will come back anytime soon. I didn’t expect this to happen, considering that I thought Naruto would stay out of this for a long time. If Jura does find a way to bring Naruto back into the main storyline again, this will enrage Kawaki.
We already know how Kawaki feels about Naruto, and one of the main reasons he wanted to seal Naruto away was to protect him from these threats, such as the Otsutsuki and now the Ten-Tails. With the prominent leader of the Shinju, Jura, his deepest desire outside of devouring Otsutsuki is to devour Naruto, which even confuses the other Shinju. They realize that Naruto himself isn’t even an Otsutsuki.
From there, thanks to Jura giving in to his instincts, the other Shinju begin thinking about their deepest desires and who they want to target outside of just a regular Otsutsuki. Matsuri then follows her instincts and says she wants to devour Konohamaru, which is ironic considering that she was created thanks to Moegi being turned into a tree. We already know Moegi’s relationship with Konohamaru, as they are childhood friends who grew up together in Konoha. Not only that, but she is also the sensei of Team 10, so she will likely have to battle them eventually.
Next, we have Sasuke Shinju, who goes by Hidari. He also follows his instincts and says that his target will be Sarada. Finally, he targets Eida (Ada) with the Bug Shinju. This caught me off guard because it took me by surprise. The Bug Shinju could sense Eida as if they were talking on a similar wavelength, similar to how Boruto and Kawaki can sense each other.
The panels show it as if, in an alternate reality, the Bug Shinju went up to Eida and told her that he was watching her. That’s when he decided that his target would be Eida herself. Because of this, Eida gets a little shaken looking through her Senrigan. The fact that he can sense and essentially see that Eida is watching over him and can communicate with her shows that this Bug Shinju has crazy awareness.
These characters are on a whole other level, to the point where even Eida is surprised. I think it’s pretty unique regarding these villains because, even though they have their consciousness, they all have different names, physical appearances, and instinctual desires.
All of their targets—the characters they want to go after—are physical embodiments of people they have had previous relationships with. This establishes that these four Shinju aren’t a fluke after all. Even though Boruto did run away since it was a 4v1, the fact that these villains are targeting other characters who aren’t Otsutsuki not only brings more of these characters into the fray but also allows them to get more shine, especially in battle.
After all, this is a battle shonen. I understand there are other aspects to this series, but when it comes to some of these characters in the manga, they don’t get the spotlight. With Matsuri, the physical embodiment of Moegi, wanting to devour Konohamaru, we will see battles between these Shinju and their targets. Most likely, these will be future battles.
For Konohamaru, after years of being slandered for getting annihilated by Kara members, filler characters, and whatnot, he’s finally going to get his shine. Even a character like Sarada, who, despite being a main character, hasn’t gotten the same spotlight as Boruto or Kawaki, will likely have a battle with this Sasuke Shinju. This will be very emotional, considering the relationship between father and daughter.
Of course, the Bug Shinju and Eida will be very interesting, considering Eida isn’t a fighter. She has said she only has basic Taijutsu and doesn’t like to fight. This makes her targeting even more intriguing, especially if her karma effect doesn’t work, which most likely won’t.
As for Jura, I don’t know how he will be able to fight Naruto. He’ll likely target Kawaki, given Kawaki’s close relationship with Naruto.
I’m glad the story has established these villains and their goals. It’s a much slower approach, but it’s very necessary. After establishing the goals of the Shinjus, we get a quick conversation between Amado and Sumire. This conversation establishes the ignorance of many people regarding the aftereffects of the Omnipotence. Of course, everybody inside the Leaf Village thinks that Boruto is the one who killed the Hokage and that Kawaki is the true son of Naruto. However, someone like Amado has started to understand that his memory may have been altered.
In this chapter, Amado breaks down all the specifics of what has happened with the events of the Omnipotence. He says that Boruto was the one who killed the Hokage and that he helped Boruto escape from Konoha with the assistance of Kashin Koji to take Isshiki down. After the battle against Isshiki—at least according to Amado’s recollection—he was the one who reconstructed Boruto’s Karma using his daughter’s DNA.
However, every time Amado looks at Kawaki, he realizes that Kawaki also has Karma and that his body is modified with scientific ninja tools. Because of this, Amado realizes that he is the one who modified Kawaki’s body, even though Boruto should have been the one who modified him. This confuses Amado because, according to his memory, Boruto was part of the Kara organization before escaping and joining the Leaf Village.
Amado brings up a significant point: something feels off when he sees Kawaki’s modified body. He explains that a creator will recognize their work just like an artist leaves their mark on a creation. This principle applies to others who view the piece as well. Similarly, despite Amado’s memory, Eida tells him he can differentiate between regular Karma and reconstructed Karma.
Amado notes that the reconstructed Karma he built for Boruto is actually on Kawaki’s palm. This contradiction between his memory and this physical piece of evidence forces Amado to conclude that his memory has been altered. He explains this as the reason behind the inconsistencies he perceives.
Despite his altered memory, Amado asserts that, as a scientist, there is no more substantial proof than physical evidence. The reconstructed Karma on Kawaki’s body is undeniable proof. However, Sarada and Sumire realize that most people will trust their memories over physical evidence because they cannot doubt their vivid recollections.
This highlights the intelligence of specific characters in the series. Characters like Sasuke, Amado, and potentially Shikamaru can deduce that their memories have been altered based on physical evidence. Sumire comments on this, prompting Sarada to reflect on how Sasuke realized his memory was altered. This occurred when Sarada unlocked her Mangekyou Sharingan, making Sasuke suspect something was wrong.
In a flashback at the beginning of the chapter, Sasuke tells Boruto that he knows his memory has been altered. He believes the only way to fix this is through Boruto, Sarada, and Sumire, who are unaffected by the Omnipotence. It is up to them to stop the aftereffects plaguing most characters in the Boruto manga series.
I appreciate how the story approaches the Omnipotence. Some characters in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex are brilliant, and it would feel off if someone like Amado or Sasuke couldn’t connect the dots. Their reliance on physical evidence instead of flawed memories is a testament to their intellect.
As Sarada reflects on her father’s words, Boruto appears in the frame. He is finally home. We see Sarada meet Boruto for the first time in three years. Boruto tells Sarada that, despite having doubts about his memory, he risked his life to survive, partly because of Sarada’s wishes at the end of Part One.
Despite Sasuke being affected by Omnipotence, Sarada’s wishes have come full circle, as Boruto is now safe. Even though Sasuke has been effectively written out of the story, he is still alive. While Omnipotence has taken a massive toll on Boruto, he has emerged victorious in this instance. Though the effects of Omnipotence are far from over, Boruto and Sarada have managed to survive and reunite.
The chapter ends on a heartfelt note as Sarada hugs Boruto Uzumaki after not seeing her best friend for over three years.
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 5 was a necessary chapter. While it was dialogue-heavy, the context provided was crucial, especially regarding characters like Sasuke, who was turned into a tree. Overall, it was a solid chapter—not overly action-packed but rich in essential dialogue.
